Lime Rendering a Cob Cottage in the New Forest

Our client reported damp issues in the lounge of this cob cottage - circa 1750.  The wall construction is clay cob, therefore chemical injection is not possible.  The previous owner / builder applied a cement based render to the internal walls which prevents the cob structures behind from 'breathing'.

We removed the cement based render and thereafter applied a lime based render (NHL2-two parts washed pastering sand to one lime in measured buckets). Prior to the lime being applied to the cob, the walls needed to be hosed down with a very fine spray.  We are in the process of applying limewash to the newly rendered walls.

The suspended timber floor in this room was found to be suffering from severe wet rot caused by the inadequate sub floor ventilation, therefore the floor was removed and replaced with treated timber joists.
