Exploring the Benefits of Underfloor Heating

More and more of our clients are opting to install underfloor heating in their homes.  So what are the benefits?

High comfort levels,  low running cost and environmental benefits.

Underfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating because it is radiant heat.  It is unobtrusive, freeing up more usable space in a room. Underfloor heating is more energy efficient than traditional radiators.

With an underfloor heating system, the floor itself becomes the heat emitter and the heating of the room is from the floor up. Radiant energy from the underfloor heating system is absorbed by the other surfaces in the room, which warm up and become secondary radiant emitters. There are no floor draughts and the temperature in all parts of the room is even.

A traditional central heating system consists of radiators, or 'emitters' mounted on the wall and the room is, effectively, heated from the ceiling downwards.  This is a form of convective heating, using the air in a room as the transport mechanism to move heat into the whole room from a small surface that must be very hot compared with the room air. The hottest air is at ceiling level and the coldest is at floor level.

Both electric and water based underfloor heating systems are available, they are almost identical apart from obviously, that one uses electric heating cable while the other circulated heated water through a pipe.

Water based underfloor heating systems use water at a much lower temperature than that required by traditional radiators, making it ideal to be fuelled by high efficiency condensing boilers; the lower operating temperature also makes it more suitable for use with heat pumps or solar water heaters. Depending on the conductivity of the floor, the water needs to be between 40 and 60°C to reach the design floor temperature. By contrast, radiators generally require the water to be at 70 to 80°C.

There are forms of underfloor heating to fit every type of floor construction, whether you choose a timber flooring or tiles, we can install an underfloor heating system to suit your needs.
